National Institute for Public Employee Health Care Policy

Over 13 percent of the American workforce is employed by public sector employers, and health care benefits are a crucial component of their compensation programs. Public sector purchasers serve tens of millions of employees and retirees who have spent decades serving in critical roles such as teachers, firefighters, and law enforcement across the country and have a fiduciary duty to offer high-quality, comprehensive benefits at an affordable cost.

The Latest from the Institute

New Specialty Drug Survey
We are excited to share a new report titled “Assessing the Unsustainable Cost of Specialty Medications,” conducted in collaboration with the Public Sector Health Care Roundtable. The report draws on data from 21 plan sponsors across 16 states, representing over 157 health plans, to understand how public sector health plans are addressing rising drug costs.

Marta Green Named Executive Director!
We’re thrilled to announce that Marta Green has been named executive director of the Institute. Having served as senior advisor since the Institute’s launch last summer, Marta played a crucial role in the organization’s formation and guided the development of its first research initiative on drug cost containment. In her new role, Marta will continue to drive the Institute’s research initiatives, white paper development, educational events, and strategic partnerships, providing stakeholders and policymakers a clear understanding of the health care benefits offered to public sector employees, retirees, and their dependents.

Just Released!
We’re thrilled to introduce our first research product — a white paper exploring how public sector health care purchasers are addressing rising drug costs. The paper is based on a comprehensive survey collected from several large purchasing organizations that collectively represent the interests of more than 5 million public sector employees and retirees. The research highlights traditional and innovative strategies to sustain drug affordability and examines how public sector purchasers contract with pharmacy benefit managers to provide pharmaceutical benefits to their beneficiaries.
