The National Institute for Public Employee Health Care Policy was honored to participate in the 37th Annual Pension & Benefits Seminar hosted by the National Association of Police Organizations.
During the session, Executive Director Marta Green provided attendees with a comprehensive overview of the Institute—who we are, why we were formed, and how our work supports public sector health care purchasers across the country.
Supporting Public Sector Purchasers with Trusted Research
Public safety employers operate in an increasingly complex health care environment. Rising specialty drug costs, behavioral health access challenges, workforce pressures, and long-term sustainability concerns all affect the ability of plans to provide high-quality, affordable coverage to active employees and retirees.
Marta highlighted how the Institute serves as a trusted, nonpartisan resource for public sector purchasers by:
-
Conducting rigorous data collection through initiatives such as the Annual Specialty Drug Survey
-
Analyzing federal and state policy developments impacting public employer plans
-
Convening leaders through roundtables and working groups to share best practices and emerging strategies
-
Advancing new research efforts, including our State Profiles project, designed to better document and elevate the role of public purchasers nationwide
Collectively, these efforts strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of the public sector health care ecosystem.
Why This Engagement Matters
Law enforcement agencies and other public safety employers face unique workforce realities, including higher exposure to physical and behavioral health risks. Ensuring sustainable benefit design is not just a financial imperative—it is essential to recruitment, retention, and honoring commitments made to those who serve.
The Institute’s engagement at the Seminar reflects our commitment to working alongside public safety leaders to provide objective data, actionable insights, and policy clarity. By equipping purchasers with credible information and peer-informed strategies, we help decision-makers navigate a rapidly evolving market while protecting the benefits public employees have earned.
We are grateful for the opportunity to share our work and to learn directly from those managing pension and health benefits on the front lines. We look forward to continued collaboration with the law enforcement community and public sector leaders nationwide.
